Orthodox Christian fighter. An oxymoron of biblical proportions. Now, pardon my ignorance, but I don't recall Jesus of Nazareth teaching the finer points of the lead left hook or espousing the importance of maintaining positional dominance before searching for a submission. Perhaps that's buried deep in the book of Deutoronomy, where God commands a town's men to stone a woman if she is found to have lost her virginity before marriage. But I digress!

Fedor Emelianenko wants you to remember him as an Orthodox Christian fighter. (Orthodox in the religious sense. That he also fights right handed is mere coincidence.) More specifically, he probably wants you to remember him as a Russian Orthodox Christian fighter (these details often get lost in translation). But just what exactly is Russian Orthodoxy all about? Read on to find out.

Through extensive research, I've discovered that the single-most important aspect of the Russian Orthodox Church is the beard. The hierarchy of the Church is decided in a "бороды", an annual competition held in Novoselki, a small town on the outskirts of Moscow. Each man -- women, unable to grow beards, are not allowed to hold power in the Russian Orthodox Church* -- presents his beard before the Patriarch, Orthodox Christianity's answer to the Pope, who grades each entrant on length, fullness, color, style, and the catch-all "Russianess."

Little-known members of the Russian Orthodox Church include artist Bob Ross, the two lead members of the rock band ZZ Top (ironically, drummer Frank Beard is Southern Baptist), and Home Improvement's Richard Karn.

* - American actress Kelly Preston is the lone exception.

This is the Patriarchal Cross, the Official Cross of the Russian Orthodox Church. There are many theories as to the symbolism and meaning behind the slanted-bar at the bottom of the cross. One theory suggests the lower bar represents the footrest to which the feet of Jesus were nailed. Another suggests the two sides of the slant represent the repentant thief and unrepentant thief that were crucified along with Jesus.

There is, however, a third, though less-popular, theory that suggests the three-bar cross represents a mile marker post Jesus came upon during his trip to Jerusalem. The top bar points to Rome, the middle bar points to Jerusalem, and the bottom bar points to Moscow. Had Jesus decided to travel north into the rough Russian wilderness, he would have avoided execution at the hands of Roman imperialists. He would not, however, have avoided being eating by wild bears.

Here we look inside your typical Russian Orthodox Church. Orthodox Christianity teaches its followers of the importance of asceticism, the renunciation of material pleasures for the pursuit of spiritual gain. Those material pleasures (i.e., gold) are handed over to the church, where they are then smelted down into wall decorations, personalized beer coozies, and toilet paper for the "Staff Only" bathrooms.

Some have called the Russian Orthodox Church a relic, a backwards institution clinging to outdated teachings and practices. Yet, this picture suggests otherwise. Here we see the practice of осмоса Библии, which literally translates into "Osmosis of the Bible." Rarely witnessed in the Western world, Orthodox Christian scientists have developed paper technology enabling the teachings of Christ to be absorbed directly through the back of one's head.

Here, Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow meets with then-Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian Orthodox Church has had a rocky road with the Russian government since losing its status as the official state religion following the Revolution of 1917. Problems intensified in 1927 when then-Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow joked to Joseph Stalin that the latter's mustache "looked like the excrement of the Russian bear" when compared with the mustache of American actor Groucho Marx.

One practice adopted from Western society is the annual Church-sponsored Halloween costume party. This party, held in 2007, turned awkward when everyone showed up dressed in the same mustard bottle costume.

Like the Catholic Pope, the Patriarchs of Orthodox Christianity are available to bless children's birthday parties, corporate team-building events, and marginally famous prizefighters. Here, Fedor Emelianenko and Patriarch Kirill laugh about the former's then-upcoming opponent, Tim Sylvia.

Andrei Zinoviev, archpriest of the St. Nicholas Church in Stary Oskol and personal confessor of Fedor Emelianenko, performs Emelianenko's wedding in October of 2009. The ceremony took place in the gift shop of an American Pilgrim museum in Minsk. As an added bonus, the crown entitles the bearer to two free Whoppers.

Emelianenko prepares to plunge into an ice bath to mark the upcoming Epiphany. The water is blessed by a local cleric, and is considered holy and pure until the following year's celebration. Followers perform the ritual as a means of cleansing the spirit, and also as an annual reminder not to go swimming during harsh Russian winters.

Showtime broadcaster Mauro Ranallo, told of the healing powers of the Epiphany, jumps into an ice bath in northwest British Columbia. It was later revealed to Ranallo that he had, mistakenly, jumped into a pool of Nair.
